Our MegaRAID SAS-3 3108 controller has the ability to use a 1GB cache to speedup transfers. However, in the event of a power loss, the data in the cache could be lost, so it uses a battery to power the disks long enough that is able to flush the data before running out of power.

Currently, the battery socket is vacant, but we may want to consider adding one.
